Basquiat – Basic Art Series
American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) quickly became one of art history’s most luminescent personalities; his friendships with Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Madonna, as well as his tragic death at the age of twenty-seven, are the stuff of legend. This retrospective publication traces the artist’s unique career and pinpoints his important position in art history. Basquiat’s works are marked by the kind of intensity and energy that also determined the course of his brief life. In just eight years—comparable to the career of Egon Schiele—Basquiat not only managed to create an extensive oeuvre, but also to establish new figurative and expressive elements alongside Conceptual and Minimal Art. At the age of twenty-one, he became the youngest artist ever to be invited to the documenta, while his work also anticipated that of Germany’s Junge Wilde movement and the art of the nineties.

Egon Schiele – the paintings
With his revolutionary and liberated view of the naked body and sexuality, Egon Schiele emphatically wrote himself into the history of art at the beginning of the last century. Even today, the women and self-portraits painted by the enfant terrible of the Viennese modern age still have an exciting and bold effect. They were all created during the last decade of his short life.
After Egon Schiele (1890–1918) freed himself from the shadow of his mentor and role model Gustav Klimt, he had just ten years to inscribe his signature style into the annals of modernity before the Spanish flu claimed his life. Being a child prodigy quite aware of his own genius and a passionate provocateur, this didn’t prove to be too big a challenge.
His haggard, overstretched figures, extreme depiction of sexuality and self-portraits, in which he staged himself with emaciated facial expressions bordering between brilliance and madness, had none of the decorative quality of Klimt’s hymns of love, sexuality and yearning devotion. Instead, Schiele’s work spoke of a brutal honesty, one that would upset and irreversibly change Viennese society.
Although his works were later defamed as “degenerate” and for a time were almost forgotten altogether, they influenced generations of artists—from Günter Brus and Francis Bacon to Tracey Emin. Today, his then misunderstood oeuvre continues to fetch exorbitant prices on the international art market.
This monograph, first published in an XL edition, is now available in a slightly abridged, more compact edition to celebrate TASCHEN’s 40th anniversary and features the paintings and drawings that retrace the fertile last decade of Schiele’s life. These works are accompanied by essays introducing his life and oeuvre, situating the Austrian master in the context of European Expressionism and charting his extraordinary legacy.

Vertical Living – compact architecture for urban spaces
In our growing cities, architects face the challenge of building more homes in increasingly smaller spaces. From tiny houses to high-rises, Vertical Living is an introduction to the architecture and interior masterminds using skillful, clever design to conquer compact living wherever there is space.
As house prices are soaring and urban plots shrink in size, a look at traditional narrow homes, especially in Japan, Vietnam or the Netherlands, where slender buildings have a long history, provides contemporary architects with inspiration for buildings with restricted space. Living small is no new phenomenon. Ultranarrow homes have often characterized the urban fabric of our historic cities where the demand for housing has outstripped the supply of land, but the slender, skinny houses that are now being build to fill the gaps offer increasingly innovative and aspirational solutions: Previously rejected, abandoned, or forgotten plots deemed too tight to develop become spacious townhouses. A London taxicab office is turned into a poppy pink micro-apartment and in just the narrowest slivers of land around Tokyo, Japanese architects manage to build high-functioning family homes.
Densification asks us to design buildings that uniquely fit a local context. The ‘International Style’ with its concrete cores and curtain wall facades uniformed our cities that once were so unique, be it London, Melbourne or Shanghai. But there’s no one-size fits all solution. Sustainable densification is about more than just efficiency. It starts with buildings that are not separate from their surroundings, but are an integral part of a healthy neighborhood. Buildings that we care about. Interiors that are dynamic and adaptable, and can be tailored to residents’ changing needs. This is why London based practice Alma-Nac refers to its approach as ‘urban dentistry’, “we work with little nooks and crannies that are leftover – like the tiny spaces in between teeth.” The more compact the house the better it has to fit its inhabitants. This takes ingenuity, and cities don’t always give architects a lot to work with. But creative solutions like skylights that allow natural light to flood into each storey, sculptural staircases that provide ventilation or roof terraces help to convey a sense of spaciousness.
Vertical Living shows 41 stunning examples from around the world and introduces four architectural practices that masterfully create a big impact from minimal space.

The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes
THE MONOCLE GUIDE TO COSY HOMES
TURN YOUR HOUSE INTO A HOME
This Monocle book tells us how to turn a house into a home. Both a practical guide and a great source of inspiration, The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes presents the interiors, furniture, and locations you need to know about along with portraits of the people who can make it happen.
The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes celebrates the durable and the meaningful through a collection of homes that tell a story. Most architecture and interior books show houses polished to perfection, manicured to the extent that it is hard to imagine anybody actually lives there: they seem to miss the point that homes are meant to be inhabited. They should be able to take scuffs and knocks and to be part of a community, whether in a Chicago skyscraper or on Australia’s sunshine coast.
