    0 out of 5

The SAS Royal Hotel turned to Space Copenhagen founders Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, who designed a chair that would look lovely in the hotel – and actually anywhere. Loafer.                                                           “The SAS Royal Hotel lobby is an essential part of their legendary interior,” says Henriksen. “It’s enormous and elegant. We wanted to design a piece of furniture that could create a sense of intimacy in this very open space.” “At the same time,” adds Rützou, “The design had to relate the signature spiral staircase and the circular columns of the space. A comfortable design that would somehow also make you feel protected. Sitting alone or in a group, without feeling too exposed.”

Whether for an exclusive hotel, club or lounge, or a private living space, Loafer offers the ultimate in luxury. The freedom to lounge in style forever.

    SAMURAI

Samurai is modern lounge chair, made from turned oak timber sections with the seat and back in high quality saddle leather or canvas. Whilst studying hunting chairs of the mid-20th century, designers Kristian Sofus Hansen & Tommy Hyldahl have created a modern interpretation of the low-slung hunting chair type, with construction inspired by Japanese simplicity combined with the Danish stick chairs of the 1950’s.

Samurai is a highly considered piece of chair making based on stick chair construction popular in the 1950’s, which marry different turned oak sections that support the seating comfort and tectonic geometry. The chair is completed beautifully with a highly crafted round oak section meeting the back in an elegant form which completes the iconic Samurai silhouette.

Samurai is offered with saddle leather from Sorensen Leathers or premium quality re-enforced canvas, which folds around the chair like armour and carries the body with ease. The seat is mounted with brass rivets in order to achieve maximum strength, whilst the back is mounted with adjustable leather straps and brass buckles.

    NY11

Inspired by traditional Danish elementary school chairs, the NY11 Dining Chair has a frame hand-crafted from solid oak and a seat of laminated oak veneer. The Chair came to life when designers Rune Krøjgaard and Knut Bendik Humlevik went on a mission to create a modern take on the Scandinavian dining chair. Just like a school chair it had to be both comfortable and very durable. The result is a simple and honest chair with a timeless expression.

The visible grains in the chair’s structure emphasise the quality of the materials and give it a natural appearance.

    Pavilion AV5 / AV6

    2018

At first glance, the Pavilion lounge chair appears almost like a rope that’s come undone. From the curvaceous wood veneer seat and back to the steel tubes that form the armrests and legs, it’s a continuous flow of lyrical lines. A lounge chair that’s airy from any angle, it’s designed to be slightly laid back and with a wider seat than its cousin the Pavilion chair. In doing so, the Pavilion lounge chair is an open invitation to lean back, relax and stay a while.

    ELEPHANT

The Elephant Chair, designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl, is a modern interpretation of Scandinavian minimalism combined with Japanese aesthetics. The design is inspired by Danish upholstered chairs of the 1950’s, while drawing visible characteristics from the already iconic Mammoth Chair. The result is a light and elegant lounge chair where the Elephant ear shaped back gently curves around the body providing superior comfort.

The Elephant chair is hand-crafted with a solid oak wood frame. The chair comes in four frame variations; Natural, Dark Stained, Black and Smoked, and can be upholstered with leather, wool and sheepskin.

The seat and back are made from the highest quality compression molded oak veneer shells. The two shells are pressed in the same press mold, and surround the body in a light soft curve. The legs are designed as one single profile without any visible joints. This enriches the experience of the material strength and exchange between the light and heavy dimensions; “elegant and simple but sturdy without being clumsy”.

    NOMAD

Nomad Chair is a Nordic interpretation of the traditional Moroccan wicker chair. The Name is a contraction between “Nordic” and “Moroccan”, to the characteristic “Nomad”.

Nomad is a reinterpretation of the classic complex wicker chair, where the number of joints is simplified to its function only. Through a close cooperation with suppliers, many experiments have been done in order to develop the Nomads large seat and back frames, as well as the back leg which runs all the way from floor to top of the back in one piece.

Seat and back are made of two large moulded bamboo frames, with inlaid French bamboo mesh. The semi- transparent bamboo mesh gives the large surface a light expression and highlights the beautiful construction. Due to the fact that this is a natural material, minor colour variations may occur.

With the chair follows a neck pillow with 3 heights, as well as a seat cushion for added comfort. Both pillows are produced in cognac leather, which highlights the warm bamboo.

    PAVILION AV1 + AV3

Located on the castle grounds of Copenhagen’s Kastellet overlooking the waterfront promenade that is home to the Little Mermaid, The Langelinie Pavilion stands with a resilient spirit. The first Pavilion was built in 1885. The second was built in 1902 for the Royal Danish Yacht Club but was sadly destroyed during World War II. The current Pavilion was built 1958 by architect couple Eva and Niels Koppel in homage to modernism. Echoing its own ability to endure is the Pavilion chair by Andersen & Voll. Here the challenge was to design a stackable chair used for mass seating in this iconic, multi-purpose venue, the Langelinie Pavilion. Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll wanted to link early modernism with new modernism. “Often tube chairs are constructed at fixed angles,” notes Anderssen. “We wanted a freer form of expression and explored the idea of bent tubing teamed with bent plywood.” “The Pavilion chair has an airy feeling, with slim arms and legs that give it a light appearance,” explains Voll. “A softer aesthetic in a curvaceous silhouette that’s barely there.” The effect is lyrical, graceful and poetic. Almost like a tied rope that has come undone.

The interplay between positive and negative space is central to in Between, Sami Kallio’s chair design for &tradition. Its back and side panels provide
a concrete shape and support, but forms are created equally by the gaps in between them. Kallio’s expertise in traditional woodworking craftsmanship is evident in the chair. In Between is produced using two classical techniques; compression molding (making it light and thin, yet strong) and woodturning (a technique that uses a lathe to achieve greater detail). Sami Kallio, with his solid grounding in the traditional woodworking techniques of Scandinavia and his eye for ingenious detail, has proven to be the ideal candidate to design the first wooden chair in &tradition’s stable. The upholstered seat is the perfect addition to the wooden chair: it embraces modern lifestyles and long, cosy dinners around the dining table, without compromising the chair’s light and elegant expression.

    LITTLE PETRA VB1

    BY VIGGO BOESEN
    2018

Initially introduced back in 1938, Little Petra won instant praise at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition, subsequently winning awards at exhibits in New York and Berlin. It’s one of just a few designs by architect Viggo Boesen, who became associated with Denmark’s signature design aesthetic in the 1930s called funkis style. Distinguished by a softer, more abundant, organic aesthetic that challenged the minimalistic approach of Bauhaus.

Named after Boesen’s mother-in-law, Little Petra is indeed surprisingly petite, able to fit into all kinds of spaces, interiors and environments. Low to the ground, open and embracing, it embodies the essence of a lounge chair, allowing for all kinds of seating positions in any cosy setting imaginable. A lot of work has gone into ensuring the utmost comfort, from the seat to the upholstery. Respecting Boesen’s love of natural materials, the legs of the chair have been crafted in oak or walnut. The result is an endearing lounge chair that beckons you to stay.
